Fieldcraft Mini Sessions

Three Hours of Focused Wildlife Photography Instruction

$225 | 3 Hours | Private Instruction

Learn to Find Wildlife.

Understand Its Behavior.

Improve Your Fieldcraft.

Becoming a better wildlife photographer starts long before you raise your camera.

Understanding where wildlife lives, recognizing signs of activity, interpreting animal behavior, and knowing how to position yourself are all important parts of creating stronger wildlife photographs.

Fieldcraft Mini Sessions are designed to help you develop these skills through three hours of focused, hands-on instruction in the field.

Each session takes place at a predetermined location selected around a particular habitat or seasonal photographic opportunity. You choose the session that interests you and an available date, and I'll take care of the location planning.

Rather than covering every aspect of wildlife photography, we'll concentrate on specific fieldcraft skills that you can continue applying long after our time together.

Whether you're just getting started or have years of photography experience, these sessions offer an opportunity to become more observant, intentional, and confident in the field.

What We'll Work On

Each session has a particular habitat or fieldcraft focus. Depending on the outing and your goals, we may work on:

  • Reading the habitat: Understanding how landscape features, vegetation, and seasonal conditions influence where wildlife spends its time.

  • Recognizing wildlife behavior: Learning to interpret behavioral cues and identify potential photographic opportunities.

  • Approach and positioning: Making thoughtful decisions about where to stand, how to move, and when to remain still.

  • Finding photographic opportunities: Learning to look beyond obvious subjects and recognize opportunities in the surrounding environment.

  • Developing field awareness: Becoming more observant and making better decisions before taking a photograph.

The emphasis is on understanding wildlife and the environment rather than simply finding an animal and taking pictures.

Available Session Types

Sessions are offered on selected dates and at predetermined locations based on seasonal opportunities and wildlife activity.

Woodland Fieldcraft

Develop a more thoughtful approach to working in forest environments. Learn to recognize signs of wildlife activity, understand how animals use their habitat, and work with vegetation, positioning, and challenging forest conditions.

Coastal Bird Fieldcraft

Learn to approach coastal bird photography with a better understanding of habitat, tides, behavior, and positioning. We'll explore how environmental conditions influence bird activity and how to make better photographic decisions along the shoreline.

Wetland Fieldcraft

Learn how to position yourself and approach working with the diverse waterfowl and other species that overwinter in the Connecticut and Massachusetts wetlands. Learn how to anticipate behavior and position yourself for successful waterfowl photography opportunities.

Available habitats and session dates will change throughout the year.

Who Are These Sessions For?

Fieldcraft Mini Sessions are a good fit for photographers who:

  • Want to learn how to find wildlife rather than simply wait for it to appear.

  • Are interested in understanding animal behavior and habitat.

  • Want to become more confident approaching and photographing wildlife.

  • Have some camera experience but want to improve their field skills.

  • Prefer a shorter, focused outing rather than a longer guided session.

These sessions are suitable for a range of experience levels. You don't need to be an advanced photographer, but you should be comfortable operating your camera.

What to Expect

  • Duration: 3 hours of private instruction.

  • Price: $225 per session.

  • Location: Predetermined based on the habitat and seasonal focus.

  • Scheduling: Choose from the available dates listed for each session.
